The leek is a bulbous vegetable belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. This herbaceous perennial plant, present mainly in winter, originates from the Middle East. It has a white stem with green leaves.
In the kitchen, leeks are eaten exclusively cooked, steamed or blanched in water, and can be used in a variety of preparations, including soups, gratins, etc. A source of fibre and vitamins, it is also very low in calories and offers many other health benefits.
